As the 2024 NFL season nears its conclusion, two Detroit Lions players have notable contract incentives within reach.
The Lions have their sights set on significant team achievements, such as securing the No. 1 playoff seed and contending for the Super Bowl. However, they are also paying close attention to individual player bonuses in these final weeks.
Reflecting on a Similar Situation
In the 2023 season finale, wide receiver Josh Reynolds was a focal point as the Lions aimed to help him secure a $250,000 bonus for surpassing 600 receiving yards. Entering the game’s final drive with only 18 yards, Reynolds managed four crucial catches for 26 yards, finishing the season with 608 yards and earning the bonus.
Head coach Dan Campbell highlighted the team’s commitment to rewarding unselfish players like Reynolds:
“That player does all the dirty work for us, all the blocking, all the unselfish play. We’re going to do whatever it takes to get him something. That’s the mindset. That’s all.”
Bonuses for Za’Darius Smith and Jared Goff
According to ESPN’s Ben Baby, two Lions players now have significant contract incentives at stake:
- Za’Darius Smith (Defensive End):
- Needs two more sacks to reach 10 for the season and earn $250,000.
- Four more sacks would bring the total to $500,000.
- If he achieves one of these sack milestones and the Lions clinch a playoff spot, he earns an additional $250,000.
- Jared Goff (Quarterback):
- If the Lions win the Super Bowl and Goff plays in at least 50% of the offensive snaps, his 2028 base salary will increase by $1 million.
- Additional escalators could apply, including a $1 million bump for earning an NFL MVP honor. However, Goff’s contract appears to allow only one of these salary escalators per season.
As the regular season winds down, the Lions will undoubtedly remain focused on team goals while also ensuring their players have a fair shot at these significant financial rewards.
