Braves’ Shortstop Dilemma May Lead to Major Signing Next Offseason
The Atlanta Braves have been fortunate to have reliable shortstops in recent years, with Dansby Swanson and Orlando Arcia handling the position.
After Swanson departed following the 2021 season, Arcia stepped in as the full-time shortstop in 2022. He excelled defensively and showed promise offensively in 2023, finishing with a solid .741 OPS. However, his performance took a significant downturn in 2024, with his OPS dropping by over 100 points.
Many experts speculated that the Braves might pursue an upgrade at shortstop for the 2025 season. Willy Adames was the most notable free agent available, but his high price tag made him a difficult target. Despite reports of Atlanta being in the mix for Adames, he ultimately signed a seven-year, $182 million deal with the San Francisco Giants. With Adames off the table, there are limited appealing free-agent shortstops left to consider.
As a result, it’s likely that Arcia will remain the Braves’ primary shortstop for 2025. His affordable $2 million salary and strong defense make him a valuable asset, and any offensive contributions would be seen as a bonus.
Arcia has a team-friendly option for 2026, which the Braves could exercise if he continues to perform well. However, the team may find a more attractive option next offseason: Bo Bichette.
Bo Bichette Could Be a Key Addition for the Braves
Bichette, the current shortstop for the Toronto Blue Jays, has been mentioned in trade rumors this offseason, though it would take a significant offer for Toronto to part with him, according to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic. Bichette struggled in 2024, dealing with injuries, including calf strains and a broken finger that required surgery. He finished the season with a .225/.277/.322 slash line over 81 games, including four homers, 16 doubles, and 31 RBIs.
However, this down year is considered an anomaly. Bichette has been one of the best middle infielders in the league since 2019, earning two All-Star selections. Aside from 2024, he has hit over .290 and averaged 20 homers per season since 2021.
The Braves’ internal shortstop options are limited, with prospects like Nacho Alvarez Jr. seen more as a second baseman due to concerns about his range. Ozzie Albies has a team option after 2025, which could open the door for Alvarez to transition to second base if the Braves decide to move on from Albies.
Adding Bichette next offseason would be a smart move for the Braves. He will be 28 years old before the 2026 season, and his potential to upgrade the shortstop position is undeniable. The Braves’ decision will depend on how Bichette performs in 2025 and whether they feel confident in their internal options.
