With outfielder Juan Soto now off the market, third baseman Alex Bregman stands as the top position player left in free agency. The big question is whether he will stay with the Houston Astros or pursue opportunities elsewhere for the 2025 season and beyond. According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, the Astros have been hesitant to offer Bregman a deal lasting more than six years. Houston seems to be preparing for a potential future without the two-time World Series champion, having attempted to trade for St. Louis Cardinals third baseman Nolan Arenado, only for Arenado to block the move by exercising his no-trade clause. Additionally, Isaac Paredes, who was part of the return from the Chicago Cubs in the Kyle Tucker trade, could move to first base if Bregman re-signs. Paredes, however, has primarily played third base since 2023.
If Bregman departs, which team might sign the 2019 Silver Slugger Award winner? Ryan Finkelstein of Just Baseball believes the Detroit Tigers are the most likely destination. He predicts a six-year, $168 million contract but suggests the Tigers might need to extend the offer to seven years to seal the deal, pushing the total value closer to $200 million. While larger markets like the New York Yankees, New York Mets, and Philadelphia Phillies could also be suitors, the Tigers have emerged as a prominent contender for Bregman this offseason. We’ll soon find out if this prediction becomes reality.
