Mets Showing Surprising Interest in Star Free Agent Infielder
As of Tuesday, the New York Mets have yet to re-sign slugging first baseman Pete Alonso or secure a replacement for him. If Alonso doesn’t return, Mark Vientos is the likely candidate to shift to first base.
This move would leave third base vacant, with Brett Baty currently poised to take over the position. While Baty remains an option, his struggles to solidify himself in the majors make it difficult to believe the Mets won’t seek additional infield reinforcements. The team is reportedly exploring several upgrades for both infield corners through free agency and trades.
Mets Eyeing Former Astros Star Alex Bregman
According to Mark Feinsand of MLB.com (via SNY), the Mets are considering Alex Bregman, the former Houston Astros third baseman and two-time World Series champion (2017, 2022).
Competition for Bregman Heating Up
The Mets face stiff competition for Bregman, with six teams expressing serious interest. Alongside the Mets, contenders include the Houston Astros, New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox, Detroit Tigers, and Toronto Blue Jays.
Both the Mets and Yankees are in dire need of offensive firepower, with the Yankees especially reeling after missing out on Juan Soto. The Red Sox are aggressively pursuing big-name players, while Bregman has connections to former Astros teammates and staff with the Tigers (manager AJ Hinch) and Blue Jays (George Springer).
While the Astros have reportedly offered Bregman a six-year contract, his camp remains unsatisfied with the terms, potentially opening the door for teams like the Mets and Yankees.
Bregman has been an incredibly consistent offensive performer throughout his career, never posting below a 114 wRC+ and maintaining a career 135 mark with 39.7 fWAR. His reliable bat would provide a significant boost near the top of the Mets’ lineup alongside stars like Francisco Lindor, Vientos, Brandon Nimmo, and others.
