The New York Yankees could be gearing up for a major free-agent move this winter, whether or not they secure superstar slugger Juan Soto. With reports suggesting the bidding for Soto could reach $600 million, the Yankees are in the race to bring him back for a long-term deal. However, if they miss out on Soto, they may turn their attention to other top-tier talent. Former MLB player Xavier Scruggs predicted that if Soto doesn’t sign with the Yankees, they will land another major prize: Corbin Burnes, the second-most sought-after free agent.
Scruggs anticipates Soto will instead sign with the New York Mets, who may be able to offer a more lucrative contract, much to the dismay of Yankees fans given the intense rivalry between the two clubs. However, this could open up opportunities for the Yankees to strengthen other areas of their roster. Scruggs believes the Yankees will shift their focus to addressing their pitching and infield needs, such as replacing Anthony Rizzo and Gleyber Torres, without the financial burden of signing Soto.
Burnes would be a major consolation for the Yankees. Over his seven seasons, the right-hander has posted a 3.19 ERA in 138 starts, made four consecutive All-Star appearances, and won the National League Cy Young Award in 2021. After joining the Baltimore Orioles this past season, Burnes posted a 2.92 ERA in 32 starts. With significant financial commitments to players like Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton, and Gerrit Cole, the Yankees may not be willing to match the Mets’ potential offers for Soto. Ultimately, missing out on Soto could open the door for a valuable pivot to a talent like Burnes, providing the Yankees with a strong offseason despite the sting of losing their top target.
