The Chicago Cubs find themselves in a tricky position as a franchise. They’re eager to win big, especially with the Milwaukee Brewers potentially taking a step back, but before they can fully commit to acquiring new talent, they need to offload some costly contracts. One of their biggest challenges is moving former MVP Cody Bellinger, who signed an $108 million deal with the Cubs last offseason. While unloading his entire contract is unlikely, the Cubs could be willing to absorb part of the salary to facilitate a trade and bring back prospects in return.
Jim Bowden of The Athletic recently suggested that the Cubs might strike a blockbuster deal with the Houston Astros. According to Bowden, the Astros are in need of a player at both first base and center field, and Bellinger could fill either role effectively. With his Gold Glove potential at first base and strong defense in center field, Bellinger could be the perfect solution for Houston. Despite a down year in 2023, where he posted a .266/.325/.426 batting line, 18 home runs, and a 111 OPS+, Bellinger still contributed 2.2 WAR, following a solid 4.4 WAR season in 2022.
This trade makes sense for both sides. The Astros would get a player who fills a pressing need, while the Cubs could offload some of Bellinger’s contract at a relatively low cost. This move would free up much-needed funds, allowing the Cubs to make a bigger splash in the offseason than anyone might have anticipated.
