The Philadelphia Phillies are coming off an impressive 95-67 record and clinching the National League East title for the first time since 2011. However, despite their regular-season success, their early exit from the postseason has raised questions about potential roster changes. One key focus this offseason is whether Houston Astros slugger Alex Bregman might end up in Philadelphia. President of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski has made it clear that he is open to exploring ways to improve the team’s roster for the 2025 season. On October 15, Dombrowski noted, “We have a lot of good players, but we just have to be open-minded to exploring what’s out there for us, talk to some clubs and see what ends up happening. That process hasn’t started. Sometimes you trade good players for good players.”
A significant area of potential change is the third base position. Alec Bohm had a standout season in 2024, driving in a career-high 97 runs and earning his first All-Star Game selection. However, his performance faltered during the NLDS against the New York Mets, where he posted a .220 OPS in 14 plate appearances. Given this, Bohm has found himself at the center of trade rumors this winter, leaving a potential gap at third base for the Phillies to address.
Bleacher Report’s Zachary D. Rymer has identified the Phillies as a strong candidate to sign Bregman in free agency, along with the Houston Astros, Toronto Blue Jays, and Detroit Tigers as other potential destinations. For the Phillies, swapping Bohm for Bregman could make perfect sense as they look ahead to a 2025 season with high expectations. Bregman, a two-time World Series champion, brings with him extensive playoff experience, having played in 99 postseason games since his debut in 2016. While signing Bregman would come at a hefty price, with The Athletic’s Tim Britton projecting a seven-year, $189 million contract, it is likely an investment the Phillies would gladly make if it increases their chances of winning their first World Series title since 2008.
