The Houston Astros’ primary focus this offseason is to secure a new contract for their star third baseman, Alex Bregman. Initially, Spotrac projected Bregman could land a deal worth around $119 million, but reports indicate the Astros have already made an offer exceeding $150 million. Despite this, rumors suggest that Bregman is aiming for a larger contract. However, it seems unlikely that any other team will surpass the Astros’ bid, particularly if Houston is willing to raise their offer to the $170 million range.
Tim Kelly from Bleacher Report forecasts that the Astros will successfully retain Bregman, beating out competitors such as the Philadelphia Phillies, Seattle Mariners, Detroit Tigers, and New York Yankees. Kelly pointed out that while Bregman could be a good fit for multiple teams, none offer a better situation than the Astros, where he has spent the first nine years of his career. Bregman has just added a Gold Glove to his already impressive collection, which includes two All-Star selections, a Silver Slugger, and two World Series titles. His status as a franchise icon makes him integral to the Astros’ future, and general manager Dana Brown has expressed optimism about re-signing him.
There has been some speculation that Bregman might reunite with former Astros manager AJ Hinch in Detroit. However, it seems unlikely that the Tigers will be willing to meet the financial demands necessary to bring in the coveted third baseman. Reports indicate that Bregman’s negotiations are already pushing his next contract over $150 million, and unless another team is willing to offer him $200 million, it’s expected that Bregman will remain with the Astros for the next five or six years.
