JUST IN: Former Celtics Star Makes Shocking Move to Rival Lakers in Major Blockbuster Trade Deal.

The Boston Celtics and Los Angeles Lakers share one of the most iconic rivalries in NBA history, and it’s no secret that Celtics fans view the Lakers as their top enemy. This rivalry has endured for decades and shows no signs of slowing down.

While it’s rare for players to switch teams across such a fierce rivalry, it does happen from time to time. As the 2024 NBA trade deadline approaches, the Lakers may have their sights set on a former Celtics point guard.

NBA insider Jake Fischer from Bleacher Report recently suggested that Marcus Smart, the former Celtics guard, could be a potential target for the Lakers. However, Fischer also noted that the Memphis Grizzlies would likely demand a significant return, possibly including multiple draft picks, to part ways with Smart.

“I’ve been hearing a lot about centers for the Lakers,” Fischer said. “We’ve discussed the Lakers’ interest in the center market, with players like Washington Wizards center Jonas Valančiūnas being linked to them. Marcus Smart could also be a viable option in a trade package involving players like D’Angelo Russell and Jalen Hood-Schifino.”

Smart, who spent many years with the Celtics before being traded to Memphis, could be a valuable addition to the Lakers. However, Celtics fans would likely be upset by the idea of him joining their archrivals.

The 2022 NBA Defensive Player of the Year would give the Lakers a much-needed defensive presence, especially as they aim for another championship. However, acquiring Smart would likely require at least two first-round draft picks, a price that the Lakers have been hesitant to pay in past trade discussions.

Currently, the Lakers have only two draft picks available to use in trades.

At 30 years old, Smart is averaging 9.4 points, 4.1 assists, 2.6 rebounds, 1.4 steals, and 0.6 blocks through 10 games with Memphis, shooting .380 from the field, .320 from beyond the arc, and .857 from the free-throw line. While his shooting numbers are slightly down, playing alongside stars like LeBron James and Anthony Davis could help elevate his game.

The Lakers’ next move remains uncertain, but Marcus Smart could very well be on their radar. Boston fans are hoping that won’t be the case, but ultimately, it’s out of their control.
