Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield has filed a lawsuit against his father’s company, alleging a breach of contract and failure to repay millions of dollars. The lawsuit, which was filed last week, claims that Mayfield and his wife, Emily, were victims of financial misconduct involving a series of companies linked to his father, James Mayfield, and his brother, Matt Mayfield.
The couple claims that $12 million was improperly “funneled” from their personal accounts, as well as from their limited liability company, Team BRM LLC. The funds were allegedly transferred between 2018 and 2021, and the Mayfields argue that these transactions were conducted without proper authorization, documentation, or accounting. According to the complaint, the defendants used the money to cover payroll and other business expenses, but the Mayfields assert that they did not receive any equity interest or financial compensation in return for these large transfers.
Sportico reported that the Mayfields reached a settlement with the defendants in January, which required the companies to repay $11.7 million, plus interest, starting on September 30. However, the lawsuit claims that the defendants have failed to make any payments and have not responded to any attempts by the Mayfields to contact them. This breach of the settlement has prompted the quarterback and his wife to take legal action.
The situation comes on the heels of a successful season for Baker Mayfield, who led the Buccaneers to the playoffs. In the offseason, the team signed him to a lucrative three-year, $100 million contract. Despite his professional success, Mayfield now faces a legal battle to recover the funds allegedly taken from him and his wife.
