The Toronto Maple Leafs are currently dealing with several key forwards sidelined due to injury, and one proposed trade could bring in two veteran forwards to help bolster their lineup.
A trade suggestion from the PuckPedia’s PuckGM tool sees the Leafs acquiring Morgan Frost and Garnet Hathaway from the Philadelphia Flyers. In return, Toronto would send Matt Benning, David Kampf, and two draft picks—one a third-rounder in 2025 (from Edmonton) and a sixth-rounder in 2026 (from San Jose)—to Philadelphia.
The proposed trade makes sense for both teams. Toronto would gain immediate forward help, while the Flyers would receive a mix of NHL-ready players and draft capital.
Frost, who has the potential to be a top-six forward for the Leafs, is in the final year of his two-year, $4.2 million contract. He has appeared in 16 games this season, contributing 1 goal and 5 assists. Hathaway, a gritty bottom-six forward, would add size and depth to Toronto’s lineup. He has recorded 2 goals and 5 assists in 19 games this season.
In exchange, Toronto would part with Kampf, a fourth-line forward, along with two draft picks. Benning, a defenseman, would also be included in the deal. Though Benning has yet to play for the Leafs after being acquired from the San Jose Sharks, he has played 464 NHL games, recording 17 goals and 85 assists.
The Leafs are in urgent need of forward depth due to injuries to Auston Matthews, Max Domi, Max Pacioretty, Calle Jarnkrok, and Kampf. Matthews, Toronto’s star player, has been sidelined with an undisclosed injury and recently traveled to Germany for treatment. GM Brad Treliving stated that Matthews is making progress and the team is hopeful he will return to play soon.
Matthews has played 13 games this season, contributing 5 goals and 6 assists.
As for Frost, who was drafted 27th overall by the Flyers in 2017, he has struggled to meet expectations and has recently been a healthy scratch. NHL insider Kevin Kurz speculates that Frost is likely to be traded, as the Flyers may look to move him to a team where he would receive more opportunity. Frost has played 245 NHL games, recording 40 goals and 76 assists.
