The New York Mets have reportedly outlined their top priorities for the offseason, with president of baseball operations David Stearns focusing on acquiring starting pitcher Corbin Burnes and outfielder Juan Soto. However, there is speculation that third baseman Alex Bregman of the Houston Astros could be a potential target. Although Bregman posted a career-low .768 OPS in 2024, his season was marred by a slow start, which he eventually overcame. He finished with 26 home runs, 75 RBIs, and 79 runs scored in 634 plate appearances, numbers that are in line with his usual output.
Bregman, represented by agent Scott Boras, is looking to secure a lucrative deal this winter. While a return to the Astros remains a strong possibility, Bregman is keeping his options open, expanding his potential market. Notably, he is willing to play second base if the right situation arises, as Boras revealed at the GM Meetings. For the Mets, Mark Vientos currently holds down third base unless he moves to another position, which could create an opening for Bregman.
In a USA Today poll, MLB editors and writers were divided on Bregman’s future, with most predicting he will stay with the Astros. However, Jesse Yomtov sees him joining the Mets. As for contract expectations, Bregman’s deal will likely start at around the six-year, $151 million extension recently signed by Matt Chapman with the San Francisco Giants, with CBS Sports’ R.J. Anderson predicting a six-year, $162 million contract for the star.
