Denver Broncos assistant head coach Mike Westhoff has stepped down from his position to focus on addressing a serious health issue.
According to NFL insider Tom Pelissero, Westhoff made the decision after multiple conversations with head coach Sean Payton and consulting with doctors. The 76-year-old coach underwent tests, including an MRI, after experiencing vision-related concerns.
“It wasn’t an easy choice, but this situation made it clear that I need to prioritize my health,” Westhoff said. “The team is on the right track, with a solid foundation and a culture of success. I’m thankful to Sean for the chance to contribute to such a top-tier organization, and I wish the Broncos all the best.”
Westhoff’s eye issues reportedly started during the Broncos’ flight home from Kansas City after their heartbreaking loss to the Chiefs, who blocked a potential game-winning field goal in the final moments of regulation to preserve their undefeated record.
Previously, Westhoff spent 12 years with the New York Jets and had returned to coaching with the Broncos for a second season after being hired by Payton in 2023. Before his time with the Jets, he also coached for the Miami Dolphins from 1986 to 2000 and worked briefly with the Baltimore Colts from 1982 to 1984.
Westhoff had retired twice before—first after his last season with the Jets in 2012 and again in 2018—before Payton convinced him to return last year.
The Broncos are currently 5-5 as they prepare for their Week 11 matchup against the Atlanta Falcons this Sunday.
