JUST IN: Bears Coach Matt Eberflus Considers Major Staff Change, Eyes Potential Exit for Offensive Coordinator Shane Waldron.

The Chicago Bears are evaluating whether to fire offensive coordinator Shane Waldron after yet another disappointing performance, head coach Matt Eberflus said Monday.

“We’re currently reviewing the process,” Eberflus stated. “All adjustments and potential changes are under consideration — we’re still in the evaluation phase.”

After the Bears suffered a 19-3 loss to the New England Patriots, marking their third consecutive defeat, Eberflus promised that changes would be coming. However, he refrained from specifying what those changes might entail.

“I think it’s too soon to announce any specific decisions or changes,” Eberflus said. “When I have clear answers, I’ll provide them. Right now, we’re not quite there.”

Eberflus emphasized that the choice to retain or dismiss Waldron is his decision alone. If Waldron remains with the team, the Bears might consider removing his play-calling responsibilities.

Currently sitting at 4-5, the Bears are ranked 30th in the league in total offense and 24th in scoring. They haven’t scored a touchdown in two games and 23 consecutive possessions since a last-minute play against Washington in Week 8, where they lost to a Hail Mary from Jayden Daniels.

The Bears’ schedule only intensifies from here, with six of their final eight games against NFC North rivals, starting with a home matchup against Green Bay this week.

Waldron, in his first season with Chicago, took over for Luke Getsy, who was fired. Before joining the Bears, Waldron was the offensive coordinator for the Seattle Seahawks under Pete Carroll for three years, where he helped quarterback Geno Smith earn the AP Comeback Player of the Year award in 2022.

After a Week 3 loss to Indianapolis, Bears players asked Waldron to push them harder. The team went on to win three straight games against the Los Angeles Rams, Carolina Panthers, and Jacksonville Jaguars.

However, since then, rookie quarterback Caleb Williams has struggled, completing just 48 of 95 passes and being sacked nine times by New England after showing progress during the winning streak.

“There’s proof on tape that we’ve played as a cohesive unit, showing complementary football and playing to win,” Eberflus said. “But I also recognize we’ve lost three in a row, so there’s a need for adjustments.”

Eberflus noted that while change is necessary, he’s still in the process of determining exactly what those changes will be.
