Robert Kraft has parted ways with Jerod Mayo as head coach of the New England Patriots after a disappointing 2-7 start. Despite initial confidence in Mayo’s potential to lead the team through the post-Bill Belichick era, the rough season led the Kraft family to rethink their decision.
Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated previously highlighted the Krafts’ deep investment in Mayo, comparing his rise to Jason Garrett’s time with the Dallas Cowboys, where the owner was heavily involved in the coach’s development. However, the challenges Mayo faced, including external pressures and a less-than-ideal roster, proved too much to overcome.
Breer also noted that the Patriots had been reevaluating their approach to developing young quarterbacks, acknowledging their missteps with Mac Jones between 2021 and 2023. Mayo’s tenure was further complicated by the need to nurture rookie quarterback Drake Maye, the team’s 2024 first-round draft pick.
While Maye showed promise, drawing comparisons to Josh Allen with his playmaking abilities, the Patriots ultimately decided a new direction was necessary. Mayo’s departure signals a shift in the team’s approach as they continue rebuilding with a focus on developing their young quarterback for future success.
