The Charlotte Hornets should keep an eye on Giannis Antetokounmpo’s potential departure from the Milwaukee Bucks, though it’s unlikely he’ll join their ranks.
Once considered a lifelong Buck, Giannis’s recent comments have fueled speculation that he may leave Milwaukee sooner than expected, especially if the team continues its shaky start to the season.
A trade might happen as soon as the upcoming deadline, with the Miami Heat and Brooklyn Nets rumored as top landing spots.
For the Hornets, Miami securing Giannis would be problematic. Charlotte currently holds a lottery-protected first-round pick from Miami in the 2027 draft, acquired through a trade involving Terry Rozier.
If Miami’s performance slips and they miss the 2025 playoffs, the pick could become an unprotected one in 2028, which could benefit Charlotte’s draft position.
A move to Miami for Giannis, however, would likely strengthen the Heat, reducing the chance for the Hornets to gain from a higher draft pick.
While it’s a long shot, the Hornets could dream of acquiring Giannis themselves, given their recent accumulation of trade assets.
However, it’s more realistic for Charlotte to focus on building through the draft, even if it means missing the playoffs this season—and hoping the Heat find themselves in a similar position.
