The Chicago Bears are expected to be sellers rather than buyers as the NFL trade deadline approaches on November 5. However, one standout player Cleveland Browns star Myles Garrett might tempt Bears GM Ryan Poles to consider a major trade.
The Browns, who are off to a 1-6 start in the 2024 season and just lost quarterback Deshaun Watson to an Achilles injury, are rumored to be considering a rebuild. They’ve already traded wide receiver Amari Cooper, and speculation is growing about Garrett, the 2023 NFL Defensive Player of the Year, being on the move. Reports indicate that both Garrett and Las Vegas Raiders’ pass rusher Maxx Crosby have caught Poles’ attention.
Sports Illustrated’s Evan Massey has proposed a potential trade scenario where the Bears acquire Garrett, suggesting it would elevate Chicago’s defense and make them more competitive in the NFC. Garrett would strengthen the Bears’ pass rush and complement an offense showing promise.
However, acquiring Garrett would come at a steep cost. Bleacher Report’s Alex Kay estimates a trade package for Garrett could require two first-round picks, along with other assets. The Bears would likely need to offer a 2025 first-round pick, a 2025 second-round pick, a 2026 first-round pick, and defensive end Darrell Taylor in exchange for Garrett.
Despite having draft capital, the financial burden of Garrett’s contract could make such a deal difficult for the Bears. Garrett signed a five-year, $125 million contract in 2020, and his cap hit for the next few seasons would limit Chicago’s ability to address other needs.
While teams are showing interest in Garrett, it’s uncertain if the Browns are willing to part with him. Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer noted that the Browns are receiving trade inquiries but are unlikely to move key players like Garrett. However, a strong enough offer could force Cleveland to reconsider, especially with their uncertain quarterback situation.
Though the Bears have been active in making impactful trades under GM Ryan Poles, a blockbuster deal for Garrett seems unlikely given the high cost and long-term implications.
