The New York Jets have issued their initial injury report for the week as they prepare for a matchup against the New England Patriots.
To begin the week, the Jets placed guard Xavier Newman on injured reserve after he sustained a neck injury during Sunday’s game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Newman had to be taken off the field by paramedics, who stabilized his neck and transported him to a local trauma center after a helmet-to-helmet collision with Steelers defender Patrick Queen. Thankfully, Newman showed movement in his limbs, and X-rays were negative, allowing him to return home with the team that evening. However, his placement on injured reserve will sideline him for at least the next four games. The Jets used his roster spot to promote safety Jalen Mills and signed offensive lineman Alec Lindstrom to the practice squad.
In other injury news, Jets interim head coach Jeff Ulbrich mentioned that quarterback Aaron Rodgers is dealing with a hamstring issue but is not expected to miss Sunday’s game. Rodgers has also been managing knee and ankle injuries and was limited during Wednesday’s practice.
There is some positive news for the Jets’ secondary as cornerbacks D.J. Reed (groin) and Michael Carter II (back) returned to practice. Reed had been limited last week but missed the Steelers game, while Carter had not practiced since suffering a back injury in a previous game in London. Both participated on a limited basis.
Additionally, tight end Kenny Yeboah had his practice window opened, which could pave the way for his return from injured reserve.
On Wednesday, the Jets held five players out of practice due to injuries from Sunday’s game against the Steelers. These included guard Alijah Vera-Tucker (ankle), defensive back Ashtyn Davis (concussion), and safety Tony Adams (hamstring). Defensive tackle Leki Fotu, who had recently returned from a hamstring injury, was also sidelined with a knee issue. Wide receiver Allen Lazard missed practice with a chest injury.
Several other players were listed as limited participants, including defensive end Will McDonald (shoulder), offensive lineman Morgan Moses (knee), and tight end Tyler Conklin (hip). Meanwhile, linebacker Chazz Surratt (heel) participated fully in practice.
