TRADE UPDATE: Detroit Lions Tied to Three-Time Pro Bowl Edge Rusher in Emerging Trade Rumors.

The Detroit Lions are holding onto hope that Aidan Hutchinson might return to play this season despite suffering a fractured leg, while also seeking immediate assistance in his absence.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Lions believe Hutchinson could make a comeback for the Super Bowl if the team advances that far. In the meantime, the Lions are actively pursuing options to bolster their defensive line, potentially including a trade with the Cleveland Browns for defensive end Za’Darius Smith.

Following Hutchinson’s injury, the Lions have been “making calls to other teams” about the availability of defensive ends and are also planning to sign players who can help fill the gap left by Hutchinson. Hutchinson, who was leading the team with 7.5 sacks, sustained his injury during the Lions’ 47-9 victory over the Dallas Cowboys on October 13, creating a significant void in their defense.

Schefter noted that Smith could be a viable option, especially since the struggling 1-6 Browns might be looking to make significant trades, having already dealt wide receiver Amari Cooper and lost quarterback Deshaun Watson for the season due to an Achilles injury.

Smith expressed interest in the potential move, mentioning the appeal of playing in the NFC North. He acknowledged the impact of Hutchinson’s injury, stating, “Hate that injury happened to [Hutchinson], a guy that was on his way to get Defensive Player of the Year possibly. That’s a big loss for them.” He added that playing against teams like the Green Bay Packers and Minnesota Vikings would be a major attraction for him.

Although Hutchinson’s injury initially suggested he might not return this season, Schefter reported that there is a strong possibility he could be ready by mid-February if the Lions reach the Super Bowl. One source mentioned that it would be more surprising if Hutchinson didn’t return for a potential Super Bowl appearance than if he did.

Hutchinson is currently recovering from surgery on his fractured left tibia and fibula at Baylor Scott & White Medical Center in Irving, Texas. Lions head coach Dan Campbell also expressed optimism, stating he believes Hutchinson has the determination to work toward a late-season return. “I would never count Hutch out, ever,” Campbell said. “So probably a long road, but I would never count him out, and I would say if anybody can make it back, it’d be him.”
