The Kansas City Chiefs are about to learn how many wide receivers it truly takes to run an offense in the NFL.
The Chiefs are currently navigating an ongoing offensive challenge, constantly losing key players week after week. Heading into Week 8, the team faces another blow as they prepare to face the Las Vegas Raiders at Allegiant Stadium. This time, they’ll be without two more starters: wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster and cornerback Jaylen Watson.
During a press conference, head coach Andy Reid confirmed that both players were ruled out for Sunday’s game. Watson’s absence was expected, as he was seen on crutches after suffering a leg injury that may be a broken ankle. However, Smith-Schuster’s injury came as more of a surprise, further complicating the Chiefs’ already thin receiver corps.
Smith-Schuster joined the Chiefs late in the offseason after being released by the New England Patriots, following the team’s acquisition of Marquise “Hollywood” Brown as their main free agent signing. Along with first-round draft pick Xavier Worthy and returning player Rashee Rice, the Chiefs built a strong receiving unit for the season. However, injuries have taken their toll. Brown suffered a season-ending injury in the preseason, and Rice was lost in Week 4 with an LCL injury. Now, Smith-Schuster’s injury leaves the Chiefs scrambling at wide receiver.
Rumors are circulating about potential trades, but time is running out for any new players to be ready for action. In the meantime, the Chiefs are likely to rely more on Worthy, while hoping players like Skyy Moore or Justin Watson can fill the gap.
