The Detroit Red Wings have faced uncertainty in goal and a proposed trade could see them acquire a struggling goaltender.
Using the PuckPedia PuckGM tool, one user suggested a trade that would send Alexandar Georgiev from the Colorado Avalanche to the Red Wings. In this proposed deal, the Red Wings would receive Georgiev along with a second-round pick in 2025 from the Rangers and a fourth-round pick in 2026, while the Avalanche would get Cam Talbot.
Georgiev is in the final year of his three-year, $10.2 million contract signed with Colorado in 2022 after being traded from the New York Rangers in exchange for third and fifth-round picks. Expected to be the starting goalie for Colorado, Georgiev has struggled over three seasons. In the early part of the 2024-25 NHL season, he has a 6.58 goals-against average (GAA) and a .787 save percentage (SV%) after being pulled in two of his first three games.
Meanwhile, Talbot, who signed a two-year, $5 million deal with the Red Wings this offseason, was anticipated to form a goalie duo with Ville Husso and Alex Lyon. In his first two games, Talbot has performed well, boasting a 1.27 GAA and a .964 SV%, making him a valuable asset as the Red Wings look to capitalize on his current high performance while the Avalanche seeks to stabilize their goaltending situation.
Avalanche coach Jared Bednar defended Georgiev after his early season struggles, emphasizing his belief in Georgiev’s talent and work ethic, noting that the issues are more mental at this point. In response to Georgiev’s difficulties, Colorado claimed goalie Kaapo Kahkonen off waivers from the Winnipeg Jets. Kahkonen had a challenging previous season, posting a 7-24-3 record with a 3.64 GAA and a .898 SV%.
Bednar mentioned that the team has seen better performances from their goalies and expressed hope that Kahkonen could contribute positively as the Avalanche aims to improve their game overall.
Additionally, the Red Wings placed goalie Ville Husso on waivers on October 13, after he allowed four goals on 14 shots in the season opener. Although Husso cleared waivers, coach Derek Lalonde reassured that the team hasn’t lost faith in him, referencing a similar situation with Justin Holl, who was also asked to be prepared to play shortly after being waived. Husso signed a three-year, $14.25 million deal with Detroit in 2022, but his performance has been lackluster, with a record of 35-28-9, a 3.25 GAA, and a .894 SV% during his time with the team.
