After the Detroit Lions’ 47-9 victory over the Dallas Cowboys, Head Coach Dan Campbell confirmed that defensive end Aidan Hutchinson suffered a season-ending broken tibia in the third quarter.
Despite the Lions’ commanding 34-6 lead, Hutchinson was still playing aggressively when he sustained the injury. The NFL’s sack leader had just recorded a sack on the play when he got hurt. Hutchinson’s season ends with 7.5 sacks over five games.
The injury was severe enough that the NFL broadcast opted not to show replays of the incident.
“That’s tough for Hutch,” Campbell said during the post-game press conference. “It was tough. He’s in good hands right now, and he’s being well taken care of. He’ll stay here for now, and obviously, he’s going to be out for a while. Losing someone like him is hard, and we’ll know more after this. We’re all wishing him the best.”
Medical staff put an air cast on Hutchinson’s leg before taking him off the field.
Cameras captured Hutchinson mouthing the words “it’s broken” as he was being attended to.
Before his injury, Hutchinson had recorded a tackle, two assists, and a sack against the Cowboys.
