The San Francisco 49ers have faced a string of injuries during the 2024 season, most notably the leg injury that has kept star running back Christian McCaffrey out since the preseason.
In McCaffrey’s absence, running back Jordan Mason has stepped up, leading the NFL in rushing yards through the first five weeks of the season. However, Mason suffered a shoulder injury during Thursday night’s game against the Seattle Seahawks and had to leave the field.
Although Mason briefly returned in the second half, the 49ers largely kept him out of the game after his first-half injury.
On Friday, there was some encouraging news about Mason’s condition. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that Mason is believed to have a sprained AC joint in his shoulder, which isn’t considered serious.
So far this season, Mason has amassed 609 rushing yards, making him the league’s leading rusher, ahead of the Baltimore Ravens’ Derrick Henry, who has 572 yards. Further tests on Friday will provide more clarity on Mason’s condition and his availability for the 49ers’ next matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday.
If Mason is unable to play, the 49ers still have solid backup options. During the game against the Seahawks, running back Isaac Guerendo impressed with 10 carries for 99 yards, including a 76-yard run that helped secure the win.
The 49ers will keep a close watch on Mason’s recovery, but for now, there is optimism that he will make a quick return.
