The Carolina Panthers are currently struggling with significant injury problems, which have contributed to their underwhelming performance. Although this isn’t an excuse for their lackluster play, it has certainly made their situation more difficult. This issue is even more pronounced when considering the team’s lack of depth as they navigate the first year of a rebuild under new leadership.
The team’s challenges grew even worse when it was announced that starting center Austin Corbett would be placed on season-ending injured reserve due to a torn bicep that requires surgery. Additionally, reliable right tackle Taylor Moton is sidelined for Week 6 and possibly beyond with a triceps injury. These setbacks are not what head coach Dave Canales needed at this point in the season.
The Panthers’ 1-4 record can be attributed to more than just injuries. Even at full strength, the team hasn’t played well, and missing so many key players has only made things harder.
Despite the tough circumstances, there is some hope for Canales as a few players may be close to returning to action.
Carolina Panthers Expect to Welcome Two Players Back in Week 6
Rookie wide receiver Xavier Legette was back at practice on Wednesday after sustaining a shoulder injury in Week 5 against the Chicago Bears. Canales also mentioned that veteran tight end Ian Thomas and cornerback Dane Jackson might be activated to the active roster this week if they continue to make progress in their recoveries.
Neither Thomas nor Jackson has played in 2024 so far, so their return could be a significant boost for the team. While Thomas hasn’t always met expectations in recent seasons, Canales appears eager to involve him in the passing game. His return would be timely, given that Tommy Tremble is currently in the concussion protocol.
General manager Dan Morgan, who knows Jackson from their time with the Buffalo Bills, believes in his abilities. Jackson’s promising preseason was interrupted by a hamstring injury, but his presence will add depth to a cornerback group that has faced challenges in coverage, apart from Jaycee Horn, over the last couple of weeks.
It’s unrealistic to expect Thomas and Jackson to immediately lead the Panthers to a dramatic turnaround. However, with the team facing continuous injuries to their starters, Canales will take any help he can get.
There is also hope that edge rusher Jadeveon Clowney and linebacker Josey Jewell will be fit to play against the Atlanta Falcons at Bank of America Stadium this weekend. If they’re not available, the remaining players will need to step up and make an impact.
In these tough times, the potential return of Thomas and Jackson offers a glimmer of hope for Canales and the Panthers, providing a small positive in the midst of their challenging season.
