South American Qualifiers: Boca Juniors Players Called Up for FIFA International Break
Boca Juniors’ upcoming match against Matador will mark the debut of the club’s new head coach, widely expected to be Fernando Gago. On Wednesday, October 23rd, Boca will face Gimnasia in the Copa Argentina quarter-finals, with the winner set to play Vélez in the semi-finals.
As for the upcoming FIFA International Break, three Boca players have been called up to represent their national teams. Miguel Merentiel has been selected for Uruguay, Luis Advíncula is set to play for Peru, and young Milton Delgado will join the Under-20 squad.
In addition, there are new updates regarding Fernando Gago’s move to Boca Juniors. Following Chivas’ recent loss, Gago publicly denied any contact with the Argentine club. However, several sources claim he is expected to travel to Argentina soon to finalize his contract with Boca.
Journalist César Lis Merlo shared: “Fernando Gago has already reached an agreement with Boca, and the release clause will be finalized this week. Although he publicly denies it, he has informed Chivas via email of his intent to activate the clause and depart.”
Merlo added: “Gago is making a communication error here. While he’s intelligent and capable, he hasn’t had the best relations with the press. Boca’s board isn’t surprised, as Gago had requested confidentiality to avoid leaks.”
Interestingly, Boca themselves reportedly leaked Gago’s candidacy for the job, with Juan Román Riquelme and the club’s Football Council aware of the situation. They allegedly agreed to deny everything to avoid complications with Gago’s exit from Guadalajara, as admitting the deal could increase the release fee by up to $1 million.
