The Toronto Raptors have addressed their defensive struggles and lack of guard depth, which plagued them last season. Under new head coach Darko Rajakovic, defence is a priority for the upcoming season. The team is returning to a pressure-based defensive approach similar to former coach Nick Nurse’s system, focusing on disrupting opponents early.
Two newcomers, Davion Mitchell and Jamal Shead, are expected to boost the team’s defensive efforts. Mitchell, known for his stifling defence and earning the nickname “off-night” due to his ability to limit opponents’ performance, made a strong Raptors debut in the pre-season. Although his three-point shooting has been inconsistent, his defensive skills remain a key asset. Mitchell is expected to be the first guard off the bench this season.
Jamal Shead, a rookie, also impressed in his debut with strong defensive plays, including steals and drawing offensive fouls. Despite being less proven as a shooter, Shead’s quickness and defensive intensity are valuable for the team. Both players have NCAA Defensive Player of the Year titles, and Shead is four years younger than Mitchell.
The Raptors have lacked guard depth since their championship-winning years, but the arrivals of Mitchell and Shead have strengthened the point guard position. With additional options at shooting guard, including RJ Barrett, Gradey Dick, rookie Ja’Kobe Walter, and veteran Bruce Brown, the Raptors are now well-stocked in the guard position for the first time in years.
