The Vancouver Canucks have acquired defenseman Erik Brannstrom from the Colorado Avalanche.
Brannstrom, originally drafted 15th overall by the Vegas Golden Knights in 2017, was traded to the Ottawa Senators as part of the deal that sent Mark Stone to Vegas. He spent parts of the next six seasons with the Senators, showcasing his offensive skills but never fully reaching his potential. Brannstrom signed a one-year, $900K deal with Colorado in free agency but was traded before playing a single game for them.
In return, the Canucks will send defenseman Tucker Poolman and a 2025 fourth-round draft pick to the Avalanche. Poolman, a 30-year-old defenseman, has faced significant injury issues, so moving his $2.5M contract in exchange for a former top prospect like Brannstrom is seen as a good move for Vancouver. If the Canucks can help Brannstrom regain his form, this trade could turn out to be a major win, although that remains uncertain given his record of just 38 points in his last 150 games.
The Canucks already have a crowded blue line, so Brannstrom might serve as a depth player unless he forces his way into the lineup with strong performances. Initially, the team planned to start the season with Derek Forbort and Vincent Desharnais on the third defensive pairing, so one of them might lose their spot.
The situation took an unexpected turn when the Canucks placed Brannstrom on waivers immediately after acquiring him. This move suggests the trade was less about Brannstrom’s potential and more about offloading Poolman’s contract and injury concerns.
With many players on the NHL waiver wire, we could see more roster changes. It’s clear that the hockey season is back in full swing with all this activity!
