The Bruins placed two goaltenders, Brandon Bussi and Jiri Patera, on waivers as they prepare for the season. Jeremy Swayman, who recently signed on Sunday, may not be ready to start just yet, but he’s expected to serve as the backup goalie on Tuesday.
Bussi had performed well late in training camp and seemed poised to be the backup behind Joonas Korpisalo, but Swayman’s return pushed him out of contention.
Patera was picked up by the Bruins off waivers from the Vancouver Canucks late in camp. Despite practicing with the team on Friday, he didn’t get a chance to play in any preseason games.
If both goalies clear waivers, the Bruins’ AHL affiliate in Providence will face an excess of goaltenders, with Patera, Bussi, Michael DiPietro, Ryan Bischel, Kasimir Kaskisuo, and Nolan Maier all competing for spots.
The Bruins also need to make additional roster adjustments to comply with the NHL’s 23-man limit.
