The New England Patriots have struggled with their receiving corps this season, and as the Nov. 5 trade deadline approaches, they’re reportedly being linked to a potential star wide receiver acquisition.
Through the first four games of the 2024 NFL season, the Patriots’ offense has been underwhelming, with no receiver having surpassed 100 yards. This weakness leaves them looking for reinforcements. Fortunately, New England has the salary cap room and draft capital to make moves, and now they’re being linked to a high-profile receiver.
Recent trade rumors suggest the Patriots could target Las Vegas Raiders wide receiver Davante Adams. According to Logan Ulrich of NFL Trade Rumors, Adams, a six-time Pro Bowler, reportedly requested a trade from the Raiders earlier this week, as reported by NFL insider Ian Rapoport.
If Adams were to join the Patriots, he would immediately become their top receiver. His 209 receiving yards this season already outpace the combined totals of Demario Douglas, Ja’Lynn Polk, K.J. Osborn, and Kayshon Boutte, who have 206 yards collectively.
However, Adams might be reluctant to join a rebuilding team like New England, though financial considerations could play a role. The Raiders are reportedly looking to move Adams due to his cap hit, which rises to $44.1 million in 2025 and 2026. Meanwhile, the Patriots are projected to have significant cap space—$138.5 million in March and $271 million in 2026.
In addition to cap space, the Patriots have a wealth of draft assets, holding 24 picks over the next three drafts, with 10 in 2025. Reports suggest the Raiders are seeking at least a second-round pick for Adams, a price New England could comfortably pay.
Acquiring Adams could be crucial in setting up their quarterback, Drake Maye, for long-term success. Since entering the NFL in 2014, Adams has amassed 10,990 receiving yards, 96 touchdowns, and has been named to the All-Pro first team three times.
With a month left before the trade deadline, time will tell if Adams makes his way to New England. Meanwhile, the Patriots are slight favorites in their upcoming Week 5 game against the Miami Dolphins, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
