In the first month of the 2024 NFL season, the Cincinnati Bengals’ defense has been underwhelming, even though their early competition—teams like the New England Patriots, Washington Commanders, and Carolina Panthers—was not particularly strong. The defense struggled to perform consistently for a full game, with the defensive line especially faltering, unable to stop the run or stay healthy. Heading into their Week 5 matchup against the Baltimore Ravens, the defensive line requires a major overhaul.
Injuries have plagued the Bengals’ defensive line, as the top four defensive tackles have already missed time this season. Starting defensive tackle Sheldon Rankins is doubtful for Week 5, though B.J. Hill and backup nose tackle McKinnley Jackson are expected to play. Additionally, 2023 first-round pick Myles Murphy, who suffered a preseason knee injury, is returning to the lineup, providing a needed boost to the defensive front.
However, with the return of key players like Murphy and Jackson from injured reserve, the Bengals had to make some roster adjustments. Defensive tackle Zach Carter was waived, likely to rejoin the practice squad. Carter played 151 snaps in the first four games—59% of the team’s total defensive snaps. Although his performance earned him a modest Pro Football Focus (PFF) grade of 44.3, his effort kept the team competitive. But at 290 pounds, Carter’s hybrid role as a defensive end-tackle didn’t work in his favor, and his lack of size made him a weak point for a team struggling to stop the run.
With added depth and talent on the defensive line, Cincinnati is in a stronger position heading into their divisional showdown with the Ravens, who boast the NFL’s top offense, averaging 429.5 yards per game, including 220.3 rushing yards. The Bengals will need to find a way to slow down Baltimore’s formidable attack, led by running back Derrick Henry and quarterback Lamar Jackson, if they hope to secure a victory.
