Sue Bird has spoken out about the ongoing issue of racism in the WNBA, emphasizing that it existed long before Caitlin Clark’s arrival.
In a recent podcast with Megan Rapinoe, Bird candidly discussed how racism has always been part of the league and that Clark is not responsible for its emergence.
Bird believes that the increased attention on the WNBA is making the issue more visible now.
“Racism has been affecting the WNBA for a long time,” Bird stated. “Caitlin is being used as a pawn. She didn’t introduce racism to the league—it’s been there, but now people are finally noticing.”
While rookies like Clark have helped boost the WNBA’s popularity, Bird highlighted that the negative aspects, such as racism, have always been present, only gaining more attention as the league grows.
