The Los Angeles Dodgers are heading into the 2024 MLB playoffs with injury concerns, particularly in their infield. If star players like first baseman Freddie Freeman or shortstop Miguel Rojas are unable to start the National League Division Series (NLDS), the team has a backup plan in place.
Freeman suffered an ankle injury during the Dodgers’ 7-2 victory over the San Diego Padres on September 26. Meanwhile, Rojas was sidelined with left groin tightness during the game the previous day. Both players have been crucial to the Dodgers’ success this season, helping the team finish with a 98-64 record.
Freeman’s impressive stats include 22 home runs, a .282 batting average, a .378 on-base percentage, and a .476 slugging percentage, along with an OPS of .854 and a WAR of 4.7. Rojas, equally reliable, has posted a .283 batting average and .337 on-base percentage, while excelling on defense with just a few errors.
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts has already outlined a contingency plan if Freeman and Rojas are unable to play. Max Muncy, who primarily plays third base, could shift to first, while Enrique Hernandez may take over at third. For shortstop, Tommy Edman could step in temporarily. Muncy has hit 15 home runs in 2024, while Edman has made solid defensive contributions at shortstop.
The Dodgers hope to have Freeman and Rojas back for their playoff opener on October 5, but are prepared to adjust if needed, aiming to stay competitive in their pursuit of a World Series title.
