Kansas City Chiefs to Be Deprived of Crucial Pass Rusher for Week 4 Matchup Against Chargers Due To Injury Set back.
Kansas City Chiefs defensive end Mike Danna suffered a calf injury during practice on Wednesday, September 25. As a result, he was sidelined on Thursday and participated on a limited basis during Friday’s practice. The injury is severe enough that Danna has been ruled out for Sunday’s game against the Los Angeles Chargers.
With Danna—who ranks second among Chiefs edge rushers in snaps this season—absent, second-year edge rusher Felix Anudike-Uzomah, a 2023 first-round draft pick, is expected to take on a larger role, along with Cam Thomas, who has yet to make his debut for the Chiefs since joining the team in late August.
Danna’s absence could hinder the Chiefs’ pass rush in Week 4. However, the Chargers may also be without starting offensive tackles Joe Alt and Rashawn Slater, both of whom were listed as “Did Not Participate” in practices on Wednesday and Thursday, making them unlikely to play on Sunday. Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo is expected to apply early pressure through blitzes to test the Chargers’ backup offensive tackles.
During a press conference on September 26, Spagnuolo shared his thoughts on the Chargers’ offense, particularly running back J.K. Dobbins, and the team’s increased focus on the running game under new head coach Jim Harbaugh.
Spagnuolo expressed respect for both Harbaugh and offensive coordinator Greg Roman, noting their influence on the team’s offensive identity. He acknowledged the Chargers’ recent injuries but emphasized that the Chiefs wouldn’t underestimate them. He highlighted the effectiveness of both Dobbins and Gus Edwards in the Chargers’ run-heavy offense, while also recognizing quarterback Justin Herbert as one of the top passers in the league. Spagnuolo concluded by saying the Chiefs would focus on defending the Chargers’ overall scheme, regardless of who plays.
