Luis Ortiz threw seven strong innings, helping the Pittsburgh Pirates snap the Milwaukee Brewers’ winning streak with a 2-1 win on Wednesday night.
Liover Peguero hit a crucial two-run double, while Ortiz (7-6) gave up just one run on four hits, with one walk and five strikeouts. His only error was allowing Jake Bauers to hit his 12th homer in the second inning.
Peguero, called up Tuesday after the Pirates released Rowdy Tellez, had been a standout in the minors, leading in hits, RBIs, and doubles. In the fifth inning, Peguero delivered a clutch hit against Freddy Peralta (11-9), driving in Yasmani Grandal and Nick Yorke, who had both walked.
“When you work hard and see the results, it’s exciting,” Peguero said. “I want to keep improving and giving my all.”
Isiah Kiner-Falefa added two hits for Pittsburgh, while Bryan Reynolds’ throw to second helped secure the win by nabbing Willy Adames in the ninth inning. Aroldis Chapman earned his 12th save.
Ortiz, who started the season in the bullpen, is pushing for a permanent spot in the rotation for 2025 alongside rookie Paul Skenes.
Ortiz said his focus has been on giving the team the best chance to win, finishing the season with a 3.32 ERA. His effectiveness has improved with the addition of a cutter to his repertoire.
Pirates manager Derek Shelton praised the new pitch, noting how Ortiz refined it during the season. Meanwhile, Milwaukee’s Rhys Hoskins, William Contreras, and Sal Frelick each singled for the NL Central champions, who are headed to the playoffs.
Peralta, a key player in the Brewers’ rotation, struck out 200 batters for the second consecutive season but struggled in the fifth inning. Brewers manager Pat Murphy acknowledged Peralta’s slip but praised his contributions overall, noting that the pitcher would get some rest before the postseason.
“I’m in a great spot and feeling awesome,” Peralta said.
