Breaking News: Cavaliers Formalize the Signing of Two Players to Training Camp Roster
The Cleveland Cavaliers have officially signed point guard Jacob Gilyard and shooting guard Zhaire Smith to Exhibit 10 contracts for their training camp, according to the RealGM transactions log. These signings occurred shortly after the team waived forwards Gabe Osabuohien and Nae’Qwan Tomlin.
Zhaire Smith, 25, stands at 6-foot-5 and was the 16th overall pick in a previous NBA Draft. He joined the Cavaliers’ camp last fall and spent most of last season with their G League affiliate, the Cleveland Charge. In 47 games with the Charge, Smith averaged 13.3 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 1.8 assists, shooting nearly 40% from beyond the arc. He also had a brief stint with the Cavaliers, signing a 10-day contract in February. Smith has played 13 NBA games, all with the Philadelphia 76ers.
Jacob Gilyard, 26, is 5-foot-9 and has appeared in 42 NBA games with the Brooklyn Nets and San Antonio Spurs, averaging 4.2 points and 3.4 assists per game. The Cavaliers recently acquired his G League returning player rights from the Memphis Hustle.
Cleveland’s training camp begins on Tuesday at IMG Academy in Florida, with the roster currently set at 20 players. A deal for forward Pete Nance is still pending.
An Exhibit 10 contract is a non-guaranteed, minimum-salary deal that doesn’t affect the team’s salary cap unless the player makes the final roster. It can also be converted to a two-way contract before the season or provide guaranteed money if the player stays with the G League team for at least 60 days after being waived.
