Spurs’ Draft Pick Looks to the Celtics for Inspiration…
The Boston Celtics were undoubtedly the NBA’s top team last season, and their dominance under coach Joe Mazzulla has not gone unnoticed by other teams. The San Antonio Spurs, like many others, are aiming to replicate their success.
While Jayson Tatum’s celebratory antics and his complaints over Olympic playing time drew mixed reactions, there’s no denying that the Celtics have built a powerhouse. Spurs’ rookie Stephon Castle is taking notes.
In an interview with *The Ringer*, Castle expressed his admiration for the Celtics’ adaptable style of play and how he envisions bringing similar versatility to the Spurs.
“The Celtics used their guards in unconventional ways, like placing them in the dunker spot to disrupt the defense,” Castle noted. “They had their guards moving around the court, contributing in various ways. I can definitely see myself thriving in a system like that.”
Often likened to Jrue Holiday, Castle is known for his strong, defensive prowess. His willingness to play a supportive offensive role, focusing on creating opportunities and making smart plays, aligns well with the Spurs’ strategy, especially with Victor Wembanyama expected to take the lead on both offense and defense.
Castle’s college coach, Dan Hurley, praised him as a “team player,” willing to do whatever it takes to win, even if it means stepping back from individual stardom, much like Holiday has done on championship teams.
Though Castle’s outside shooting still needs work, he is expected to dominate inside, using his physicality to overpower smaller defenders on his drives to the rim.
While fans shouldn’t expect Castle to adopt Tatum’s flashy celebrations, they can anticipate seeing him embrace the Celtics’ style on the court.
