Astros GM intends to ‘engage and talk about’ Third Baseman Contract extension with agent once season ends
Alex Bregman, who is set to become a free agent, is anticipated to be among the top players available this offseason. As the Houston Astros aim for their fourth consecutive American League West title, general manager Dana Brown has begun discussions about a potential contract extension with Bregman and his agent, Scott Boras.
“We recently met in Anaheim, and while we had a brief conversation, we agreed to reconnect once the season concludes,” Brown shared with MLB.com. “Currently, there are no formal contract negotiations happening.”
Brown has previously expressed his hope that both Bregman and second baseman Jose Altuve would finish their careers with the Astros. Altuve has already secured a five-year extension that will keep him with the team through 2029.
Bregman, 30, is projected to be one of the most sought-after free agents this winter. As of last Friday, he had a batting line of .254/.311/.436 (113 OPS+) with 23 home runs and 67 RBIs in 138 games, contributing approximately 3.6 Wins Above Replacement according to Baseball Reference. This season marks the third consecutive year he has exceeded three wins, bringing his total over the last three years to 13.
The specific terms that Bregman and Boras will pursue in the offseason remain uncertain. The highest contract for a free-agent third baseman since 2019 belongs to Anthony Rendon, who signed a seven-year deal worth $245 million with the Los Angeles Angels. Since then, no other third baseman has surpassed a $30 million average annual value, and only Kris Bryant has exceeded $25 million per season.
