JUST IN: Glaring concerns loom for Steelers’ underwhelming offense entering Week 3.

The Steelers narrowly defeated the Denver Broncos 13-6 this past weekend, keeping their lead in the AFC North. While there were exciting moments on both offense and defense, there are several areas the team needs to improve before their upcoming home game against the Los Angeles Chargers.

Penalties Stall the Offense

Steelers fans saw Justin Fields take charge of the offense with a promising performance. However, multiple penalties disrupted the team’s momentum, preventing the offense from dominating the Broncos. Offensive tackle Broderick Jones was penalized three times, including a costly flag that negated a 51-yard pass from Fields to George Pickens. In total, the Steelers were hit with 10 penalties for 78 yards, far from the disciplined performance expected under Coach Mike Tomlin. The offense will need to be more disciplined heading into Week 3.

O-Line Struggles Continue

The offensive line continues to struggle with mistakes, allowing Fields to be sacked twice. While they’re still a work in progress, better protection and communication are critical. One key error happened late in the 4th quarter when a miscommunication led to a snap hitting Fields in the face, though it was fortunately recovered by running back Jaylen Warren. Despite this, the line did create better running lanes for Najee Harris and Warren, with OT Troy Fautanu standing out as a bright spot. However, consistency and awareness need improvement.

Wide Receiver Concerns

The wide receiver corps is currently in disarray, with George Pickens being the only reliable target. Van Jefferson has not lived up to expectations, and Calvin Austin III was shaken up by a hit from Broncos’ safety P.J. Locke. Scotty Miller, despite playing 14 snaps, didn’t see any targets from Fields. On the upside, Fields did show progress by successfully targeting the middle of the field. The return of rookie Roman Wilson could also provide much-needed support to Pickens.

Finishing Games Strong

While the offense had a solid first half, the Steelers continue to rely too heavily on their defense to secure wins, a pattern carried over from last season. Last week, T.J. Watt’s game-winning sack sealed the victory, and this week, it was Damontae Kazee’s interception that ended the Broncos’ hopes. Moving forward, Coach Tomlin must push the offense to close out games more effectively on their own.

Looking Ahead to the Chargers

With two straight wins and first place in the AFC North, Pittsburgh is excited for their home opener against the Los Angeles Chargers, a team known for making big plays. However, discipline will be key for the Steelers. Reducing penalties and improving offensive execution will be crucial to maintain their winning streak.
