Oleksandr Usyk Detained in Poland, Released After Zelensky’s Intervention…
Heavyweight boxing champion Oleksandr Usyk was briefly detained in Poland on Tuesday while trying to board a flight to Valencia, Spain. Usyk, who was traveling with his trainer Sergey Lapin, was preparing for his upcoming rematch with Tyson Fury in Saudi Arabia on December 21. The two were stopped at Krakow Airport when an airline official deemed them unfit to fly, likely due to their exhaustion after a long 14-hour journey from Kyiv, Ukraine.
Usyk tried to explain the situation, but a language barrier escalated tensions, leading to him being handcuffed and removed from the jet bridge. His wife, Katheryna, later posted a video of the incident, clarifying that nothing criminal had occurred.
Usyk was eventually released after intervention from Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry and President Volodymyr Zelensky. Usyk expressed gratitude for the peaceful resolution, calling the incident a misunderstanding.
