Top Rookie Sensation Emerges as Key Player, Enhancing Duke’s Receiving Depth…
Duke football’s wide receiver lineup has gained more depth with the emergence of a third threat, strengthening their offense. Offensive coordinator Jonathan Brewer, known for his air-raid system, has been quick to let quarterback Maalik Murphy launch passes downfield, making the wide receivers essential to Duke’s offensive success.
Up until now, seniors Jordan Moore and Eli Pancol were the primary targets, accounting for about 55% of Duke’s catches in the first two games. However, in their game against UConn, freshman Que’Sean Brown stepped up and expanded Duke’s receiving options.
Before the UConn game, Brown had minimal involvement, with just two catches for one yard across the first two matchups. But on Saturday, he led the team with 11 catches, 87 yards, and a touchdown, proving he could be a key player in Duke’s passing game moving forward.
Moore and Pancol usually draw a lot of attention from defenses due to their ability to make difficult catches and break free in open space. Although the UConn defense focused on them, they still had solid performances, with Moore recording five catches for 73 yards and a touchdown, and Pancol adding four catches for 61 yards and a touchdown.
Brewer needed a third option, and Brown rose to the occasion, showing he can share the load when defenses focus on Moore and Pancol. Brown credited his preparation and learning from Moore and Pancol in practice, which helped him step into a bigger role.
Brown’s speed and ability to stretch the field give Duke’s offense even more versatility, making them better equipped to compete in the ACC.
