Pittsburgh Steelers Defense Shines in a 13-6 Win Over Denver Broncos…
The Pittsburgh Steelers edged past the struggling Denver Broncos with a 13-6 victory on Sunday, marking their second consecutive road win. Quarterback Justin Fields once again filled in for the injured Russell Wilson, who missed his second straight game due to a calf injury. This game was meant to be a homecoming for Wilson, who played two seasons in Denver before being released by coach Sean Payton. However, Fields made his second start in a row but failed to make a strong impact, while the Steelers’ defense carried the team to a hard-fought victory. Despite not playing, Wilson was given the game ball by coach Mike Tomlin.
Fields, speaking about Wilson’s return to Denver, said, “It was nice to get him a win.” He threw his first touchdown pass of the season and completed 13 of 20 passes for 117 yards without any interceptions as the Steelers secured their third straight win against the Broncos. “It’s always tough to win in this league, so starting 2-0 on the road is great,” said Fields, who had also won his first start against Atlanta in a solid but unspectacular 18-10 victory. “But we have to improve. We need to clean up the penalties and get better, including myself. If we do that and our defense keeps playing well, we can start scoring more points and be in good shape.”
In Week 1 against Atlanta, Fields was kept out of the end zone as kicker Chris Boswell scored six field goals. On Sunday, Fields led four 3-and-out drives and two 4-and-out drives. His only successful drive came in the first quarter when he threw a five-yard touchdown to tight end Darnell Washington, capping off a 12-play, 78-yard drive that lasted over seven minutes. Wilson’s availability for the Steelers’ home opener against the L.A. Chargers remains uncertain, with coach Tomlin expected to provide an update later in the week. The game is scheduled for a 4:25 p.m. ET kickoff.
