Winnipeg Jets center Cole Perfetti remains optimistic about securing a contract extension ahead of the 2024–25 NHL season, despite no agreement yet being reached between him and the team. The 22-year-old restricted free agent has drawn interest from other teams, but discussions between his representatives and the Jets are ongoing.
Both sides are hopeful for a deal, as reported by Michael Russo of The Athletic on September 11. “We’re working on a deal with the Jets,” Perfetti told Russo at the NHL Player Media Tour in Las Vegas. “I want to stay there, and I’m hopeful it will be finalized soon. I’m confident something will happen shortly.”
Although excited about the potential contract, Perfetti admitted to experiencing frustration last season, especially when benched by former head coach Rick Bowness. He mentioned that Bowness’s tendency to scratch players wasn’t new, referencing similar treatment of stars like Jason Robertson and Roope Hintz during Bowness’s time in Tampa and Dallas.
“It was part of his approach to player development, and even though I didn’t agree with it, I respected his decision,” Perfetti explained. “I used it as motivation moving forward.”
Despite the challenges, Perfetti had a breakout season, tallying 19 goals and 38 points in 71 regular-season games. However, he only appeared in one of the five postseason games.
With Perfetti being the only remaining free agent on the Jets’ roster and about $5.78 million in cap space, according to PuckPedia, Winnipeg is positioned to lock him into a long-term contract. Perfetti sees the arrival of new head coach Scott Arniel as a chance for a fresh start, building on last season’s ups and downs. “It’s about learning from last year and using it to improve,” he said.
