Golden State Warriors Has Offered a Max Contract to Their Top Player Ahead of Upcoming Season…
The Golden State Warriors have decided not to offer Jonathan Kuminga a max contract for the upcoming season, at least for now. According to Anthony Slater of The Athletic, the team is not ready to provide the two-way forward, who was the No. 7 pick in the NBA draft, with a maximum extension.
This means they won’t be offering him a deal comparable to the five-year, $224 million contract Franz Wagner received from the Orlando Magic, which starts at 25 percent of the salary cap. Although Kuminga has shown significant potential and could potentially earn such a deal with continued development, his limited track record and the Warriors’ control over his restricted free agency provide them with reasons to wait.
Kuminga is in the final year of his four-year, $24.85 million rookie contract for the 2024-25 season. Last year, he averaged 16.1 points, 4.8 rebounds, 2.2 assists, and 0.7 steals per game. The Warriors are more interested in seeing if Kuminga can make a significant improvement that would make him a key player on a championship-caliber team alongside Stephen Curry.
They are focused on another championship run with Curry still in his prime, and committing to a max deal for Kuminga could impact their future plans if he doesn’t develop into the top-tier player they need.
