Alexander Nikishin on Season Ambitions, SKA Journey, and NHL Prospects…

In a recent interview, Hurricanes prospect Alexander Nikishin discussed his goals for the season and his potential future move to the NHL. Although still sidelined due to an injury that ended his previous season, Nikishin reflected on his strong performance with SKA, where he led the team in scoring with 56 points over 67 games.

Nikishin acknowledges the importance of stats, especially when evaluating his progress and comparing seasons. However, while stats can play a role in contract negotiations, he’s more focused on his current performance. He also admitted to being self-critical, often replaying bad games in his mind.

Regarding his style of play, Nikishin draws inspiration from other players like Alex Ovechkin and John Carlson. He respects their techniques, even admiring Erik Karlsson despite the criticism around him. Nikishin emphasized the need for versatility in hockey, saying that although he’s a defenseman, he likes joining offensive plays when necessary.

On the topic of moving to the NHL, Nikishin isn’t rushing, as his current contract with SKA takes priority. However, he’s in regular contact with the Carolina Hurricanes, who drafted him in 2020. The team shares feedback and advice, especially on the differences between North American and Russian hockey.

Nikishin also recounted his historic 2022 trade from Spartak to SKA, where he was later elected team captain after a teammate’s injury. Despite being one of the youngest players, he’s embraced the leadership role, though he recognizes that he still has much to learn.

As for his goals, Nikishin hopes to have the best season of his career with SKA and help his team reach and win the Gagarin Cup Final. After that, joining the Hurricanes seems like a natural next step.
