Maple Leafs’ Nick Robertson Saga Takes Unexpected Turn..
After months of speculation regarding Nick Robertson’s future with the Toronto Maple Leafs following his trade request on July 1, a surprising development is on the horizon.
NHL insider Darren Dreger reported on TSN 1050’s ‘First Up’ on September 9 that Robertson, who is a restricted free agent and has yet to receive a contract offer, is now likely to reach an agreement with Toronto before training camp.
Despite initially seeking a trade, the 22-year-old forward is expected to stay with the Maple Leafs, especially with a vacancy on the team’s left wing.
Dreger noted, “I believe they’re close to getting a deal done, and Nick Robertson will return to the Maple Leafs. It seems like he’s beginning to recognize what he has in Toronto and is ready to make the most of the opportunity.”
Robertson, drafted 53rd overall by the Leafs in 2019, has shown promise but has struggled to secure a consistent role due to injuries and limited NHL playing time. This lack of opportunities led him to request a trade earlier this summer.
Last season, Robertson played 56 games, recording 14 goals and 13 assists with an average of 11 minutes and 23 seconds of ice time per game. Dreger suggested that the lack of substantial interest from other teams may have influenced Robertson’s decision to remain in Toronto.
Additionally, Dreger mentioned that Maple Leafs coach Craig Berube has assured Robertson that he will be given a chance to compete for a top-nine forward spot during training camp. As of now, and unless new free-agent signings occur, Toronto’s left wing depth includes players like Matthew Knies, Bobby McMann, Pontus Holmberg, and prospect Connor Dewar.
