Houston’s Kyle Tucker and Arizona’s Ketel Marte were activated from the injured list on Friday ahead of a three-game series between the Astros and Diamondbacks. Tucker, an All-Star right fielder, returned for Houston, while Marte, an All-Star second baseman, rejoined Arizona.
Tucker had been sidelined since June 3 after fracturing his right shin with a foul ball. Although not fully recovered, he was set to play as the designated hitter on Friday before eventually resuming his defensive role. Astros manager Joe Espada explained that Tucker’s return will be handled on a day-to-day basis, emphasizing that they’ll monitor his condition and adjust his playing time accordingly.
Espada also mentioned that Tucker’s speed on the field might be limited to 75-80% of his full capacity initially. Before his injury, Tucker was performing exceptionally, recording 11 doubles, 19 home runs, and 40 RBIs in just 60 games.
Meanwhile, Marte’s absence was shorter, having been out since August 18 due to a left ankle sprain. He also made his return as the designated hitter on Friday. Arizona manager Torey Lovullo praised Marte’s dedication to his recovery, noting the player’s significance to the team. Lovullo added that Marte will gradually resume his regular second base duties after starting as DH.
Before his injury, Marte was hitting .298 with 30 home runs and 81 RBIs. To make room for him on the roster, Arizona sent outfielder Jorge Barrosa to Triple-A Reno. In Houston, the Astros optioned infielder Zach Dezenzo to Triple-A Sugar Land and designated left-handed pitcher Parker Mushinski for assignment to accommodate Tucker’s return.
