Brady Wouldn’t Start Maye Right Away: Legendary QB Offers Insight…
The seven-time Super Bowl winner supports New England’s cautious approach with their rookie quarterback.
The New England Patriots have decided to start veteran Jacoby Brissett for Week 1, leaving rookie Drake Maye on the bench, despite Maye’s strong preseason performance. Former Patriots legend Tom Brady agrees with head coach Jerod Mayo’s decision.
During his appearance on *The Herd* with Colin Cowherd on FOX Sports, Brady was asked if he would start Maye or let him sit and learn.
“I’ve said before that, in my opinion, it’s better for young or rookie quarterbacks to watch a veteran first,” Brady explained. “There’s so much to process, and quarterbacks have to take in so much information quickly.”
Brady referenced his own experience and other elite quarterbacks who learned from established veterans before becoming starters.

“I spent my first year behind Drew Bledsoe, an incredible player I was able to learn from,” he said. “Aaron Rodgers learned from Brett Favre, and Patrick Mahomes learned from Alex Smith. Having a seasoned pro in front of you can ease that learning curve and prevent a young quarterback from losing confidence in their skills.”
He continued, “Eventually, young players will get their shot. Teams rely on them to step up and lead the franchise in the future, but it’s important to give them time to adjust to the pro game. It’s a big leap from college to the NFL.”
Brady’s viewpoint reflects what unfolded during the 2023 season. Bryce Young, the top pick in the draft, struggled after being thrust into action for the Carolina Panthers, while Jordan Love thrived after sitting behind Rodgers for two years in Green Bay.
While some rookies like C.J. Stroud of the Houston Texans defy the trend, the benefits of giving a rookie time to develop are clear. Even if Brissett falters, the Patriots are right to wait until Maye is fully ready to succeed.
The Patriots open their 2024 season against the Cincinnati Bengals this Sunday, with kickoff at 1 p.m. ET at Paycor Stadium.
