Player Profile: Zach Hyman
Zach Hyman isn’t your typical high-scoring forward, even though his 70 goals from last season, including both the regular season and Stanley Cup Playoffs, might suggest otherwise.
His game is defined by more than just scoring—he’s known for his relentless effort, physical play, and ability to create opportunities for his more skilled linemates.
Hyman’s importance to the Edmonton Oilers extends beyond just points—he adds toughness, defensive reliability, and versatility, as he can play on either wing.
These qualities make him invaluable, especially on a team as strong as the Western Conference champions. However, his path to this point wasn’t always straightforward.
Zach Hyman’s Early Hockey Career:
Hyman’s hockey journey began with promise when he was named the 2011 Canadian Junior Hockey League Player of the Year. He also represented Canada, winning gold at the 2013 Maccabiah Games in Israel.
Before entering the NHL and collegiate leagues, Hyman established himself in junior hockey. Playing for the Hamilton Red Wings, he was recognized as Rookie of the Year, captain, and twice named MVP.
In his final Junior A season, he led the team in scoring with 42 goals and 102 points in just 43 games. He also ranked second in the CJHL with an impressive 2.37 points per game.
At the University of Michigan, Hyman continued to excel, earning multiple honors, including Athlete of the Year and First Team All-American.
He set a Big Ten record for points in a season with 54 (22 goals, 32 assists) during his senior year and was a finalist for the Hobey Baker Award.
Despite his success, Hyman was considered a late bloomer. He was drafted in the 5th round of the 2010 NHL Entry Draft by the Florida Panthers but chose not to sign with them, believing there wasn’t a clear path to the NHL.
His rights were eventually traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs, where he debuted in 2015 and quickly became a regular. As a rookie, he set records for most short-handed goals (4) and tied for the longest assist streak by a rookie (6 games).
Hyman’s Rise with the Edmonton Oilers:
In 2021, Hyman signed a seven-year, $38.5 million contract with the Edmonton Oilers, attracted by the chance to play alongside stars like Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl. His first season saw him achieve a career-high of 27 goals and 54 points.
During the 2022 playoffs, he made a significant impact, setting a franchise record by scoring in every game of the five-game “Battle of Alberta” series against Calgary, finishing with six goals and eight points.
The 2022–23 season saw Hyman reach new levels, posting a career-best 83 points (36 goals, 47 assists) in 79 games. His performance continued to shine in the 2023–24 season, where he scored 54 goals, solidifying his role as a key offensive force for the Oilers.
At 32 years old, Hyman may not be the flashiest player on the Oilers, but his grit, determination, and ability to contribute in all areas of the game have made him an indispensable part of the team’s recent success.
Whether it’s battling in the corners, scoring critical goals, or providing a strong defensive presence, Hyman is a player who does it all—and does it exceptionally well.
