Edmonton Oilers’ defensemen Evan Bouchard and Mattias Ekholm have earned spots on NHL Network’s list of the “Top 20 Defensemen Right Now.”
Bouchard, ranked 9th, and Ekholm, ranked 16th, are recognized as one of the league’s best defensive pairings, both having had standout seasons last year. Despite the Oilers’ defense facing criticism, these two players have proven themselves among the elite.
Bouchard, drafted 10th overall in 2018, became a full-time Oilers defenseman in the 2021-22 season, recording 43 points. He nearly doubled that with 82 points last season, setting career highs in all offensive categories.
His dominance continued into the postseason, where he set a record for most assists in a single playoff run with 26. NHL Network’s 9th-place ranking for Bouchard reflects his regular season and historic postseason, though some believe he deserves even higher recognition, considering he was fifth in Norris Trophy voting last season.
Ekholm, Bouchard’s defensive partner, is ranked 16th. The 31-year-old also had a career year, recording 45 points and finishing with the third-best +/- in the league at +44.
NHL Network credits his ranking to his ability to limit shot attempts against, as the Oilers controlled 60% of shot attempts when he was on the ice, the 9th highest in the league. Since joining the Oilers in 2023, Ekholm has not only excelled defensively but has also served as a mentor to Bouchard, contributing to the pairing’s success.
Together, Bouchard and Ekholm have become a formidable force on the blue line. As they look ahead to the 2024-2025 season, the question remains whether Bouchard will emerge as a Norris Trophy frontrunner and if Ekholm can continue his strong performance. Only time will reveal their continued impact.
