New York Yankees captain Aaron Judge showed class and concern after umpire Nick Mahrley suffered a concussion from a Giancarlo Stanton backswing.
The incident occurred during Sunday’s game at Yankee Stadium, where Mahrley had to be stretchered off the field. Stanton, known for his powerful swing, inadvertently struck Mahrley, leading to the injury.
Judge expressed his sympathy, acknowledging the challenges umpires face. “We’re all hoping the best for Nick,” Judge told Bryan Hoch of MLB.com.
“It’s tough to see him get carted off like that.” The game paused as Mahrley received medical attention, with players and fans alike showing their support.
Although tensions between players and umpires are common, there remains mutual respect for the dangers they all face on the field. Mahrley, in his first full season as an MLB umpire, has made a positive impression so far.
Rockies manager Bud Black and pitcher Austin Gomber stayed updated on his condition, with Gomber noting, “He’s getting good care. Hopefully, he can recover quickly and return before the season ends.”
Despite the Yankees’ eventual victory, Mahrley’s well-being remained a concern. The team, along with the Rockies, sent their best wishes for his swift recovery, hoping he can resume his duties before the season concludes.
